Tekken 3 #ThrowbackThursday

With Tekken Tag Tournament 2 just around the corner, let’s take a stroll down memory lane…

Game: Tekken 3 (1998)
Platform: Arcade, PlayStation

Remember back when the kids were lining up, quarters in hand, to challenge each other on 2P machines? Street Fighter still dominated the 2-D fighting realm with Street Fighter III. The Tekken franchise had been a 3-D arcade fighter similar to Virtua Fighter. However, everything changed with Tekken 3.

With Namco System 12 technology, Namco smoothed out the polygons provided full 3-D backgrounds the likes of which had never been seen before!

The story introduces Jin Kazama, the son of a complicated relationship between Jun Kazama and Kazuya Mishima and a new cast of characters. Jin is forced to deal with an emerging evil both in the world and within himself. Returning characters include Heihachi, Anna, Nina, Paul, Lei and Yoshimitsu.

The PlayStation release of Tekken gave gamers more mini-games that many have come to expect from Tekken Titles. Tekken Ball, where characters cause damage and attack with the help of a ball, and Tekken Force, a Streets of Rage-like side scroller serving as a prototype for future campaign modes. The most popular is Tekken Bowl, an addicting bowling game which has since been made into an iPad/iPhone mini-game.

This game is a fan favorite among original PlayStation gamers. Tekken 3 attracted many gamers since it changed the franchise visually. The gameplay set the stage for subsequent Tekken releases and the next game in the family, Tekken Tag Tournament.
